Young Place Shapers (YPS) was an Environment Trust programme funded by the Royal Borough of Kingston, helping young people and young adults to lead and support practical action in their community that was good for people and good for the planet. It was completed in 2016.

The best thing about volunteering was that I gained new skills in tree cutting and planting etc. I also met some new people and had some fun in the sun.

YPS was about putting young people at the heart of communities by supporting them to undertake practical action that improves local spaces and places, whilst providing them with skills and experience that can support their future.

Through the YPS programme we worked with young people to help them apply knowledge and skills they were learning at college, university, work or at home. In return, we learned more about how young people can and want to contribute to making positive change in their local area

Environment Volunteering YPSThe young people’s achievements included creating a bee garden in Canbury Gardens and wildflower planting in Kings Passage, Kingston upon Thames.  YPS ‘Bench with a view’ project helped Kingston win their first silver gilt award for London in Bloom in 2014.

The YPS Program

The project was for young people and young adults aged 16-24 interested in undertaking practical action to tackle environmental and social issues.

We aimed to provide them with opportunities to apply and further develop their knowledge, skills and confidence to lead and support positive change in the world around them, promoting healthier and more sustainable living. As leaders, they will be able to make a positive difference in their communities, inspire other young people to become active citizens and volunteers and demonstrate their talents and skills to potential employers.

“We have worked with Young Place Shapers for two years and we are grateful to them for bringing a new group of young volunteers to environmental volunteering in Kingston … We believe it is very important that young people become involved with their local environment and natural heritage to ensure that it is valued and celebrated for years to come” Kingston Parks Service
